This blog was originally dedicated to update my friends and family on the details of my recovery from a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). I later began writing myself and now use this blog to document my journey through life with a spinal cord injury.

A Final Update For 1-4-14

I'm currently at the hospital just listening to Carson snore. Thank you everyone for respecting the family's wishes and not visiting today. Carson will also be here tomorrow, we know that it is Sunday and a lot of people have free time and will want to visit. It is still not time for visitors. Thank you for honoring that.

While I was here this morning he kept being woken up by his nurses entering and exiting and doing a number tests. I was a little bugged because he really needed to rest. He was gracious, as always. In the moments when he was awake I would read him notes and comments from people. When he hears them he just smiles and says "wow," then, almost instantly, he is asleep. He was able to sleep uninterrupted during the most of the afternoon which is great news.

When I got here around 7 he was still sleeping. He woke up when the nurses came to do a shift change. They moved him in bed so that he was more comfortable and they changed his boots. They adjusted the angle of his bed so that he could hopefully burp. For you and I, burping seems like such an involuntary thing. When you don't have control of your diaphragm it makes it more difficult to burp. It is a game of repositioning yourself so that the gas will come up. He waits for hours and even days for burps to finally come up. I can now see why he was so excited when he burped the first time we visited him. I asked him how the burp feels, he said it just burns inside his lungs. His only other words to me were, "Hello" and "I love you" before falling back to sleep.

He didn't pass his swallow test today, so he has a feeding tube that goes up his nose and down his throat. He hates that blasted tube. He said it burns and is very uncomfortable when he tries to swallow. Because of the tube he has to keep his mouth open, it dries his mouth out a lot. He says that his spirits are still high, though he is in a lot of pain and discomfort. Lets pray that he passes his swallow test and can get that tube out of his nose!
