This blog was originally dedicated to update my friends and family on the details of my recovery from a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). I later began writing myself and now use this blog to document my journey through life with a spinal cord injury.

Carson's Second Surgery Outcome

Carson finished his surgery at about 12:30 this afternoon, making his total surgery time about 5 hours.  Here are the updates on what we know about his condition. All the other posts will be about the incredible things surrounding this experience and about Carson's vibrant personality.

Injury Update:

  • The surgery was performed while Carson was on his stomach.  There was a whole bunch of hardware installed that helped stabilize the rest of his neck.
  • Another purpose of the surgery was to remove as many of the pieces of shattered bone as possible. The surgery went a little longer than expected, they kept finding more pieces of bone.
  • This surgery was much more critical and important than the first surgery. The first surgery was mostly to prevent any further nerve damage. This surgery was a very dangerous and critical surgery. The doctors said it went as well it it could under the circumstances.
  • Carson experienced a good deal of pain after the surgery. They gave him a button that he can press with his thumb and will give him a dose of pain killers. It will only work once every 10 minutes. To say the least, he loves his new button.
  • Carson hasn't eaten since the accident. (more on that in further posts) They will begin feeding him small amounts of food over the next while.
  • The first surgery wasn't too hard on Carson, but this one wiped him out. He slept for a long while after the surgery was finished.
  • There is no conjecture to be made on the final outcome of this injury. His parents wished that we stress that. We do not know the what the final outcome of the injury will be. You just never know what movement and feeling will come back, even after long periods of time. We will continue to he hopeful that Carson will walk again, but if not, you will still see miracles coming from this kid. That is something I am entirely sure about.
